Secondary progressions – Submerged part of an iceberg?
Welcome to the forecast methods part 2!
As you will remember, in my last blog I have written about Solar Return charts and transits as forecast methods in astrology. To refresh your memories, you may check the following link: https://amethystastrotarot.com/?p=975
This week, I will be writing about the secondary progressions.
Before starting, I would like to mention something which is very dear for me when I write these blogs. (I have written about this both on my Twitter @astrotarotvirgo and Instagram accounts @Amethystastrotarot) “If you can’t explain it simply you don’t understand it well enough”. This quote is attributed to different names – but let’s call it anonymous.
I concur that if we are not able to explain something in a simple manner, then we may be lacking some understanding of the subject. On the other hand, some of us may create or think in a very complex way and may not describe what we are doing in a simple way.
As I always mention, I am really interested in mentoring, which I am planning to start soon, I try different ways to explain concepts without using too much terminology -which is a way to deepen my understanding as well- so that even someone that does not have any clue about the subject, can still understand what I say.
After this long introduction, let’s say ‘Hello!’ to secondary progressions.
I have to indicate that there are other types of progressions, but the most used one is the ‘secondary progressions’. Only technical information I will give is that in calculating these we assume that one day that passes after our birth corresponds to one year. So, let’s say if we would like to learn about the progressed chart of our 30 years of age, then we would be looking into the chart that corresponds to 30 days after our birth.

So, what about it?
We can think of secondary progressions as follows: A natal chart is already a puzzle, but this forecast method is much complex, it explains a deeper, undiscovered part of that puzzle waiting to be unearthed. We may even think of it as the submerged part of an iceberg, deep down there. The question is that do you want to see it, are you ready to discover it or not?
I think that journaling may be a good way to understand secondary progressions if a person is able to express their inner feelings on paper…Otherwise, since they are very subtle (normally they may not be associated with real life events, but they may in some cases) they may be hard to spot…This method does really require a lot of self-analysis and inner understanding.
In this regard, based on archetypal definitions, we may always have a way to understand what kind of expressions the native may develop but it is much harder to pinpoint compared to the other forecast methods. You really need to be in one-to-one session with the chart owner and you may depend a great part on the openness of the person. In this regard, as much as the native talks and shares, then you may have the opportunity to understand more what may unfold and give more guidance.
As a way of practicing and developing our methods in forecasting, it is very common to work on the charts of people known by the public; say politicians, celebrities, artists, etc. However, I think secondary progressions may not be the best method in terms of application, in specifics of the celebrity charts. Famous people ‘live’ their lives in front of the public by choice or unwillingly does not mean that we really know what ‘really’ is happening inside them…And trying to give meaning to the secondary progressions by pushing or trying to connect to real life events in these people’s lives may not be the right alley…So, in case as an astrologer, if someone is ready to share the details of their chart and also privacy in terms of inner life, it may be a good way to demonstrate the impact of secondary progressions on their chart which will be a real life example (please, not Vincent van Gogh or Meghan Markle!)
I know it has been very ambiguous so far. Let me try to give a simple example: In line with the above-mentioned calculation method, the Sun moves 1° per day (=per year in the secondary progressions). This means that in your natal chart if your Sun was in 29° Scorpio, this means that after 1 year of life, the Sun would have progressed into Sagittarius. Your natal expression, identity that may be defined by Scorpio qualities will be still there. However, for 30 years after your 1st birthday, you may start seeing the Sagittarius qualities embedded into your personality, as well. I must mention that as the sign changes, there will be changes in the houses – areas of life (not necessarily synchronised with the change of sign) during this period as well. So, this change of focus on different parts of our lives might alter or add new features to our personality, too. As it suggests, it may be completely something that we may experience inside. However, at some point it may be inevitable not to have these inner changes reflected in our lives.
One important point is that young age sign/house changes may not be spotted easily by the native. Nevertheless, in later stages of life, we may really understand that something is going on differently inside and with the help of this method we may have the ‘Aha’ moments.
I only gave Sun as an example, but in secondary progressions Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus are considered as well, whilst Saturn-Jupiter and outer planets have less focus because of their slow movements. As Moon is pure emotions, I must tell that progressed Moon, moon cycles and lunar phases may help a lot with self-analysis and self-realisation.
I hope that I was able to give a good “taster” of secondary progressions.
