Decan Walk is a journey and

we all have different ways of realising it!*

If this article had been an interview and I had been asked ‘How did your journey with the 36 decans start?’ I would have said: “I have two different stories to tell!”

One would take me to age 9-10 when my mother was telling me ‘You are a Virgo but you were born in the 3rd decan of Virgo!’ I could make something out of the word ‘dekan’ in Turkish as I was learning the unit of measurements and I was like ‘That should be something related to 10!’ However, I still had asked my mom and she had told me that it was a Taurus decan corresponding to the last 10 degrees of Virgo. Today, I can understand that she was talking in terms of triplicity order. Don’t ask me how she knew about the decans since in late 1980s there weren’t much sources about astrology and my mom wasn’t even a professional astrologer, never had been one…

The second story is much contemporary compared to my nearly 40 years back childhood story. I was learning Tarot at the International Tarot Foundation and I ended up in Facebook Tarot group. It was 6-7 years ago if I am not mistaken. Bry Grayson was explaining the 36 decans in terms of Tarot and I was fascinated by the explanations. After that, I found my way back to the 36 decans in astrology and started searching ways to explain to myself and to others how astrology meets tarot through the 36 decans.

That’s how I started preparing the videos for TABI YouTube channel by explaining the associated tarot cards using RWS deck and possible meanings in astrology in line with the related decan ruler(s). At a point, I was getting flu and other things happened and I couldn’t finish the videos which I started in March 2023.

Then, in 2024 I said I will do the decan walk preparing some posts including short quotes from ‘Dreaming the Decans’ by T.Susan Chang. Same year, I gave a talk with the title ‘When 36 Faces Meet 36 (Lesser) Secrets’ at the Astrological Association conference in UK and I still give that talk in different societies in UK. I even developed a workshop version of it and presented it to some members of TABI.

As I don’t like repeating myself, in 2025 I created this concept ‘1 decan 1 card 1 chart’ for the decan walk. So, I was recording these videos about each decan in which I was talking about the associated minor arcana card and a public figure who had the Sun in the related decan. However, I cut that half way since I felt that the message going through well. I stopped posting on my own YouTube channel amethystastrotarot and so the decans series ceased to exist.

Since then I have been thinking what to do in 2026 and as I explained in a note yesterday, I may go more academic, more in depth using different sources throughout the history but this time not limiting myself to RWS deck cards and maybe using cards from different decks.
