Yellow dwarf Star – The Sun (Part 1)

When we say Sun, I am sure that different associations form in our minds….

In addition to its being the natural source of energy – no Sun energy, no life on earth- and being at the centre in the solar system, Sun has always had a major place in the mythology of various cultures and has a central role in astrological interpretations.

I should mention that it is also the ruler of 5th zodiac sign Leo. Actually it is thanks to ‘Leo and the Strength card’ titled blog I would like to write next that I decided to make a separate blog about ‘mighty’ Sun.

Like I always do, I will try to cover The Sun in terms of astronomy and mythology this week. Next week, I will write about the Sun in astrology and as an exception, I will add the associated Tarot card which is also ‘The Sun’. I say exception since at the moment I write about ‘zodiac sign and the associated Tarot card’ pairs.

Looking at the astronomy of the Sun, as the title suggests it is a type of star called ‘yellow dwarf’ and “The Sun is the largest object in our solar system, comprising 99.8% of the system’s mass. Though it seems huge to us, the Sun isn’t as large as other types of stars…and there are billions of stars like our Sun scattered across the Milky Way galaxy.”

Yellow dwarf stars are medium-sized stars which and it is worth to mention that “Yellow Dwarf Star is the colloquial term for a G-type main-sequence star. The ‘yellow’ bit of the name is a bit misleading, as the colour of these stars can be anything from white to only a little bit yellow.”

What about the Mythology?

Sun may appear as both gods and goddesses in the myths of different cultures. The ‘Arinna’ was the goddess of both the “sun and fertility” for Hittites. (https://www.worldhistory.org/hittite/). “The sun god Kodoyanpe and the trickster Coyote together created the world and set about making people to live in it for Native Americans in the Pacific Coast.” The list of the deities associated with sun in the mythologies can go much longer with Shamash (Babylonia), Ra (Egypt), Belenus (Celtic)…

Whatever name it is given or however it has been described, the most important thing about the Sun is that throughout the history, the people were always interested in knowing about the Sun, when it rises, when it sets, how it is positioned so on and so forth…

As the Sun is sitting at the centre of our Solar system and that’s why this system is called ‘heliocentric’, as the last deity, it may be nice to have a look into Helios. “Helios was one of the Titans, son of Hyperion and Theia and brother of Eos (the Dawn) and Selene (the Moon). The personification of the Sun, he was portrayed as driving a four-horse chariot across the sky on a daily basis. At a later time, Helios was conflated with Apollo; to the Romans, he was known as Sol. He shines upon men and deathless gods, and piercingly he gazes with his eyes from his golden helmet. “

What a rich mythological background for the Sun.

I guess it has been a brief and smooth introduction to Sun. Next week, we may get more into the details of Sun in terms of ‘astrology and Tarot’.
