Ethics in Reading Tarot

So, firstly ‘what is ethics?’

Ethics is concerned with what is good for individuals and society and is also described as moral philosophy. The term is derived from the Greek word ethos which can mean custom, habit, character or disposition.” You can check following link for more details: http://www.bbc.co.uk/ethics/introduction/intro_1.shtml

Having defined what ethics is, now I may start talking about the Ethics in Tarot reading.

I had the chance to investigate this subject further when I was taking a course in Tarot reading. At the end of the course, I was asked to outline the ethics that I would like to implement when I am reading Tarot. Through a nice blend with the course’s suggestions and my ideas, I created my ethics in Tarot reading as follows:

1- Good intent and purpose
2- Confidentiality
3- Tradition of Tarot Reading
4- Openness
5- Non-discrimination/Non-judgmental
6- Trust between yourself and the questioner

If you bear with me, I will try to explain each title as I have done so during the course.

1- Read with good intent and purpose

It is important not to give negative vibes to the questioner even the cards do not seem to be very positive. Also, sometimes the way the question comes can obtain some down feelings but we still need to keep the spirit up and read with good intent.

2- Confidentiality

It is vital to keep the details of the reading between ourselves and the questioner.

3- Uphold the tradition of Tarot Reading

Tarot is a very eccentric and different way of seeing and explaining things that is going on in our lives or in the lives of other people. I completely agree that the experience is part of the reading and we need to do our best to give this to the questioner. Although we should not give a Tarot reading lesson, we should express our way of reading and what to expect from Tarot clear from the beginning. This is a way to show our respect to the art of reading and part of confidence building and openness.

4- Openness

It is important to be open with the questioner. It can be even the case that in that reading we do not feel something right, but we do not want to pass a negative vibe, we should be able to say that we need to postpone that reading for another time, not charging for the reading of course, because we will not be able to read for a specific reason.

5- Non-discrimination/Non-judgmental

Whatever the race/gender/age and all related may be or the type of the question may be, we should just concentrate on our reading without making any discrimination and we should not be judgmental about what the questioner asks or comments about the reading. That is very important!

6- Try to build trust between yourself and the questioner

I think if we can achieve all the above and play our role in ethics in reading, we will be able to build a solid relationship between ourselves and the questioner that will lead to a life-long trust in us and in our reading.

In the light of these, I can say that if one day you come to me and say ‘Teri, read for this person and I will pass the reading to her/him’ my answer will be a big ‘NO’. I only send the reading to the related person, so what I generally do is asking the contact details of the questioner.

So, in addition to the huge disclaimer I have, these are the ethics that I try to uphold when reading Tarot.

I hope that you have enjoyed this blog and like I always say ‘Please like, follow and share’ if you feel so.

Next week, something about Astrology, but what?

I am not being mysterious; I have just not decided yet😊))

Stay well, until next week…
