Gemini-Mercury-The Lovers
This week’s blog will be about the zodiac sign Gemini, its ruling planet Mercury and the associated Tarot card the Lovers. Since in Virgo I explained Mercury in detail, I will just explain why Mercury makes sense as the ruler of Gemini.
Gemini is known to be the famous ‘I think’ sign. It is not that the others do not think, but Geminis are known to express themselves much better with their ideas rather than emotions. (Like I always say this is a general definition, there may be people with their Sun in Gemini but with completely different distribution in their natal chart and we may have a remarkably diverse scenario.) They may be very social, eager to learn, curious, easy to communicate with while sometimes they may come out with challenging qualities like “restless, gossiping” as mentioned in Gillett’s book ‘The Secret Language of Astrology’.
A few months ago, I have written a paragraph in my Facebook page, regarding the mythology and astronomy of Gemini which was as follows: “While I was expanding my knowledge about Gemini, I learnt about the myth of the twins Pollux and Castor. It is interesting that immortal Pollux managed to keep his mortal brother Castor together with him as immortal with the help of his father Zeus. https://www.ancient.eu/Castor_and_Pollux/
Also, in the constellation Gemini in astronomical terms they are defined as twins and described as follows: “Pollux, the brightest star in the constellation Gemini, blazes in a golden light next to its bluish-white heavenly twin, Castor, in the evening skies of the Northern Hemisphere’s spring.”

So, why is Mercury (https://amethystastrotarot.com/?p=710) the ruling planet of Gemini? It is because Mercury represents ‘communication, swift action, ideas’ which are exactly what Gemini is about, as mentioned above. It is important to mention that trickster Mercury can be mirrored in some of actions of Gemini from time to time. I always think that it is not about being ‘unreliable’, but more to do with fast thinking causing sudden changes of heart that may look like tricking. One moment this idea may look good and be agreed upon, another moment it does not sound the best anymore and the agreement may be ‘null and void’ since the previous idea will definitely not work.
So, The Lovers and Gemini. In my opinion, it is an interesting match looking at the astrological definition of Gemini. (As I have mentioned before, this is my personal interpretation, not depending on Golden Dawn) Normally, this card is about decisions, balanced choices we make in life. It is true that there is love element associated in line with the name of the card, but essentially it is about harmony and compassion as number 6 suggests in Numerology. However, if we approach from another perspective such as: ‘to make the right decision, there needs to be a good thinking process and, in some cases, good level of communication has to be put in place which require someone well equipped with social skills’. In this regard, Gemini may make sense for the Lovers card. We have to keep in mind that this card is Air element as Gemini and they are all pointing to the ‘I think’ line of Gemini as well.
