Capricorn-Saturn-The Devil (card)
I hope that you all enjoyed last week’s blog (https://amethystastrotarot.com/?p=710) about Virgo-Mercury-Hermit.
This week, I am going to talk about the zodiac sign Capricorn, its ruling planet Saturn and the Major Arcana card associated with Capricorn, the Devil. You may remember from the previous weeks, my blog about Numerology discussed birth and shadow cards. (https://amethystastrotarot.com/?p=647) According to the calculation indicated there, let us say if you have number 6 as the birth card which corresponds to the Lovers card, then your shadow card will be 6+9=15 The Devil.
Capricorn, which is generally known to be symbolised by a goat, is actually symbolised by a goat-fish/sea goat (I hear the ‘ooooh, really’ sounds at this point😊))As explained in the ‘The Secret Language of Astrology’ book by Roy Gillett, “The sign of Capricorn seems to derive from ancient Sumer, where the goat-fish was a symbol of the creator god Ea.” If you would like to learn more about this deity, please have a look at the following link to have a more detailed about Ea (Akkadian), Enki (Sumerian): https://www.britannica.com/topic/Ea
Having said that, in astrological terms, Capricorn which represents the knees and bones in our body, is known to be responsible, ambitious, hard working in terms of character traits, whilst keeping in mind that these qualities may cause inflexibility, too much controlling instincts, not too much on the positive side I am afraid. As I have mentioned last week, these are all general characteristics. A person with a Sun sign Capricorn with a natal chart that has different placements may appear to us not like the Capricorn mentioned above.
What about Saturn?
Again, let us first look at it in terms of astronomy. As it is mentioned in the Nasa website: “Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest planet in our solar system.” And “It is not the only planet to have rings—made of chunks of ice and rock—but none are as spectacular or as complicated as Saturn’s.” https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/saturn/overview/
When we look at the mythology of Saturn (Greek counterpart Cronus), Saturn is the God of agriculture and that is why he is generally depicted with the ‘scythe’ in hand. Also, there was a festival that was organised in his name, which was called ‘Saturnalia’. I have written a piece about Saturnalia in my Facebook page.(https://www.facebook.com/tpastrotarot/posts/179403680602537) https://www.ancient.eu/Saturn/
In astrological terms, there are quite a few associations made with the planet Saturn. There may be a general view of seeing this planet with more negative energy which is also called ‘malefic’. However, I would not personally agree with this although I am aware of the definitions and reasons expressed why it is considered as ‘malefic’. Saturn comes with boundaries, limitations and fear which is true, but there is a great effort and perseverance there as well. It is also associated with old people and time (sometimes even with antiques). It is true that its expression sometimes may be suffocating or bit pushy, you feel like you get stuck, nowhere to go in some situations; on the other hand, it may sometimes bring the necessary discipline, organisation etc. wherever it may be placed, not only limitations. In this regard, the boundaries, perfectionism and perseverance match it as the ruler of ambitious, loyal, from time-to-time inflexible Capricorn. (yet again it is just a general explanation, always the chart as a whole carries an importance)
The Devil – I need to make an entrance to the Tarot card ‘The Devil’ as follows: Please, do not approach any Tarot card with any positive or negative judgment, because all the cards bring different ideas and give different guidance within the context.

So, when we look at the Devil card, as I always say, it is not ‘devil’…It may be a warning or advice but at the end of the day it is a guidance more on the side of what ‘not’ to do to or what to stop to make our lives better. Devil can sometimes appear being in the state of a wrong and you are free to go but you just do not want to…So there may an obsession, addiction involved for not setting ourselves free…so how this can be related to our sea goat? I still think that there is a perfectionist and stubborn side to Capricorn in realising their ambitions and in this regard, sometimes it may be the case that they behave like the Devil card such that when ambitions are concerned they may go all the way even it may affect their health over time or can steal from their family time in case of work or they may continue what is called a ‘toxic’ relationship because of the time or effort invested or just it may become an obsession. Besides this, I do not think there is any devil neither in the Devil card nor in Capricorn zodiac sign which is associated with this card.
I hope that you all enjoyed this week’s blog.
For next week, I may go with Gemini, ruling planet Mercury (which I have covered in Virgo blog) and the associated card the Lovers.
