Aries-Mars-The Emperor

As some of you may remember, when I wrote about the good-hearted centaur Chiron (https://amethystastrotarot.com/?p=686), I had given information about the first sign of Zodiac, Aries. (We are still in Aries season, for the ones who celebrated their birthday ‘happy belated birthday’ and who are going to celebrate soon, ‘happy birthday in advance’😊)

Let us look back at the definition of Aries in astrological terms: “The element that is associated with Aries is ‘fire’ and the ruling planet is Mars. And it is good to mention that Aries represents the ‘head’ in our body. When we say Aries, what kind of personality are we talking about? They like initiating things. They may start a project but that does not mean that they may stay until the end of the project. Or they may get furious suddenly like fire energy, but they may calm down as fast as they fire up. Sometimes, they may also lack empathy. With the energy of Mars, they may be fearless as well. Aries can be defined passionate, motivated, courageous, optimistic, or impatient, impulsive, aggressive.” (As I always reiterate, this is a general definition and with different placements in the natal chart you may show completely different qualities.)

What about Mars? In mythology, we have Roman mythological God Mars and his Greek equivalent Ares. Mars: God of War, protector of Rome, even considered as the father of Romulus and Remus. Compared to impulsive Ares, Mars had a virtuous level as indicated in the following link: https://www.worldhistory.org/Mars/?visitCount=3&lastVisitDate=2021-4-3&pageViewCount=4

In this regard, we may say that Aries carries characteristics of Mars more compared to Ares, although the impulsiveness of the latter god may still be there.

Coming to the planet Mars in astronomy, as you may all know that is the famous red planet which is half the size of the Earth. Fiery Mars is associated with colour ‘red’. That is why it has been named Mars reminding blood in mythological terms, although the red colour comes from the oxidised iron minerals on the surface of the planet. https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/mars/in-depth/?_gl=111qkqns_ga*RXM4Y21Rc0NiSlo3dzMtbm1LNnZYVkVEOFZMUW0ybnFacVJENFVHbjFOUjNxQVpaZUFkOXIzNmF1S09rbHk4bg

So, what does this small, red planet that has the largest volcano in the Solar system mean for Astrology? It is the planet of courage, energy, action, aggression, self-assertion…And it is good to mention that Mars is the ruling planet of the sign Aries and co-ruler of the sign Scorpio.

The question is that how is the Major Arcana card, The Emperor, associated with Aries? When we think about the general definition of the Emperor, there is a serious, very driven person that may go all the way and may sometimes discard the people on the way when they are not in agreement with the decisions taken by the Emperor. When we look at the depiction, we see the dominance of the colours red and orange/yellow, as well as the worn leg armours indicating anytime ready to initiate something maybe go into a war or a fight. When we think all about this, the Emperor’s ‘either you are with me or you’d better get out of my way’ state of mind and readiness to start things, sometimes in an impulsive way, are very much associated with the sign Aries and the fiery, energetic fire element, and even some ways with the planet Mars although The Tower card is associated with Mars.

I hope that you have enjoyed this blog. Next week, as I have already covered Mars and Pluto, I may go with the zodiac sign Scorpio and associated tarot card Death.
