Uranus and The Fool
I would like to wish everyone a very healthy and good 2022 although until I wrote the blog, we came to the end of January.
This is the first blog of this year for me and officially Venus retrograde finished and we are approaching the end of Mercury retrograde as well. The good news is that after the 3rd of February for some time no more retrogrades. Aaaand the month of February will start with a lovely New Moon, looking forward to that, too.
So, I was planning to write about Judgement card and Pluto until I realised that I mentioned it briefly in a blog about Pluto before. In this regard, not to repeat myself, I will be writing about Uranus and the associated Tarot card ‘The Fool’.
After getting some quotes from a previous blog (https://amethystastrotarot.com/?p=825 ) where I have explained Uranus more in detail, I will be elaborating more about ‘The Fool’ card and its association with Uranus.
Uranus
As Nasa suggests “Uranus is about four times wider than Earth; it is an ice giant and has 27 known moons, and they are named after characters from the works of William Shakespeare and Alexander Pope.” https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/uranus/in-depth/ As we can already see here that in line with its originality as referred in astrology, Uranus is the only planet of which moons are not named from Greek or Roman mythology.
Having said that, when we think of the connection of Uranus with technology, innovation again in terms of astrology, it is not surprising that it was the first planet to be discovered via telescope.
What about the mythology of Uranus? “OURANOS (Uranus) was the primordial god (protogenos) of the sky…Ouranos was the literal sky, just as his consort Gaia (Gaea) was the earth. Kronos (Cronus) (Roman deity – Saturn), took his place in the centre and there castrated Ouranos with an adamantine sickle.” https://www.theoi.com/Protogenos/Ouranos.html
When it comes to astrology, Uranus is considered as one of the ‘Outer Planets’ / ‘Transpersonal Planets’ which are the gas giants and much farther away compared to the other planets. Also, they are slow moving planets and represent generational traits since they stay long time in a certain sign as in the case of Uranus – 7 years on average in a sign. But what is the expression of Uranus? Eccentricity, technology, innovation, revolutionary ideas as well as sudden changes and shocks.
The Fool Card
Before coming to the connection between Uranus and the Fool card, it might be a good idea to have a glimpse at the general definition of the first card of the Major Arcana (Greater Secrets) although it is with the number 0.
When we think about the general meaning of the Fool card, a card which is very rich with symbolism and meaning in my opinion, we might tell quite a lot.

We might think of the Fool card as the prelude to the Major Arcana, but not a minor introduction, contrary a major and an important one. It is the start of the journey, in an extraordinary way.
So, the Fool is just by the cliff looking up at the sky as if their head is over the clouds, the sun is shining and the white dog, a wise and loyal friend is trying to take the attention of the Fool. In a way, the dog is trying to give some advice to the Fool, but will the Fool be listening to this friend?
This card has a feeling of this unknown and maybe danger represented by the cliff. On the other hand, without getting to the other side of the cliff will we ever know what might be really waiting for us behind it? Life is sometimes full of risks and when you don’t take them, you might not reach anywhere.
So, is the Fool real the ‘fool’? I don’t think so at all…Just someone that wants to start or restart their journey, maybe still listening to the advice of the trustworthy people but on the other hand trying to do it ‘their’ way, whether it is very risky or not.
Also, even though we don’t know what there is in the bag over the shoulder, it still gives some sense of preparation for starting a new path…
Even though his worn-out clothes might be symbolising poverty or the outfit of a performer as mentioned in different sources, at the end of the day it might be a sign of someone that has nothing to lose which might make it easier for them to take more risks.
There is much more symbolism from the feet to the white rose or the sun or the depiction on the bag but I just wanted to give a feeling of the general meaning until now.
Uranus and Fool card association
When we decide to count things, we start from 1, we don’t generally start from 0. In this regard, it is an interesting number to be given to the Fool card, it is really eccentric like the Uranus itself.
I was thinking about number 0 with its practical meaning in our lives. We are born and that day we are 0. We are starting a ‘life’, a whole journey from ‘0’. I see number 0 as a bridge as well. When we look at the negative and positive numbers, backwards or forward they need to first say hello or bye bye to 0 before getting to the other side. And, as the saying goes, we sometimes need to start things from 0, like from scratch when life does not treat us in the best way in some areas.
In this regard, I feel like 0 is actually very important, it is intriguing in the context of the Fool and Uranus.

Sometimes we have the sense of rebellion in Uranus. In that sense, the Fool might be in state of revolt against the life that they have been leading so far and now would like to make a sudden change, wants to be original, does not want to be like everyone else…Might be wanting to give a different direction to their life…Uranus might symbolise new as well, so leaving behind the old and now going towards the new is what the Fool may be trying to do. When we think that the cycle of the Major Arcana is completed with the World – Saturn – old to start a new cycle with the Fool-Uranus-new, Uranus-The Fool connection makes a lot of sense.
In addition to this, talking about a bridge, kind of a transition from old to new and at the same time serving like a key to an unknown reminded me of Chiron the centaur. Even though the Fool might not be exactly Chiron who is the mentor, healer at the same time, I still think that it might have some association with the Fool. (Chiron is placed between Uranus and Saturn in terms of astronomy. If you would like to read more about Chiron, I have 2 blogs about it: https://amethystastrotarot.com/?p=672 and https://amethystastrotarot.com/?p=686 )
Also, looking at all the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana cards along with the court cards, there is something refreshing about this card, putting it apart from the other cards, something really intriguing…
When I started writing this part of the blog, some questions came to my mind: ‘What brought the Fool to the edge of this cliff? What did they leave behind? The head is up in the sky like over the clouds, but there is a confidence and who cares chin up there as well, so is the Fool really not aware of what they are doing or instead certainly sure about how this journey might start and end?’
I feel that in addition to the world-wide known explanations of this card, in this blog I managed to connect with The Fool more, in a different way gaining a totally new perspective.
I hope that you enjoyed reading Uranus and the Fool.
